4 Month Old Baby Development

Four months have passed and your baby is getting more and more active now! There are a lot of things he can do already and has developed new things too! If you want to know more about your 4 month old’s developement, continue reading below.

Your 4 Month Old’s Developement:

Eating less often: Four months has already allowed your child to grow a bigger stomach, allowing him to eat less. He can now be fed only 4 to 5 times a day by now. He’s still adding more weight though; making feeding becomes lesser and lesser. Feeding him might also become more difficult because he becomes more aware of his surroundings. If your baby’s attention gets diverted easily, try feeding him in a quieter place.

Starting solid foods: Some doctors allow moms to feed their babies with solid foods during this age. It means you can start feeding them with pureed baby food or mushy foods now that his digestive system has already developed to absorb solids. But it is still recommended that babies at this age continue breast or formula feeding. Solid foods might also bring on an allergic reaction to some babies, so waiting a little bit more won’t hurt!  Here is a 4 month old baby feeding chart for additional information.

Rolling over: When he has reached this age, he may be able to roll over now from his back to front, and vice verse. He may raise his head up and shoulders, using his hands whenever he is placed on his stomach. To develop this skill, you can play with him by wiggling a toy next to his side. Just make sure to applaud on his efforts to assure him that what he’s doing is proper.

Playing alone: By this age, he really starts to amuse himself with the new things he discovers. He starts to explore, so you may now leave him alone next to you. You can start doing things you usually cannot do since the day of his arrival.  Here is a baby’s favorite toys.

Colors: From birth, they still cannot distinguish colors of similar tones. But during his 4th month, he starts to tell apart colors and sort them according to their shades. They also tend to like bright primary colors more than the dark ones.

Grabbing objects:  He may now be able to grab objects within reach, and even try to put it inside his mouth. Just remember to watch your baby so that he won’t be able to swallow small objects.

You should try to encourage your baby in exploring new things such as giving him a light rattle. Watch him be amazed by the sound that it makes when you try to shake it. You should also try bringing him on an activity center or cradle gym so that he will be able to explore more things.

Unfamiliar faces: Your baby starts to respond to your voice and presence.  He starts to select only a few people about the company he keeps. He tends to react with people and needs a lot of time to be comfortable when around with a group of unfamiliar people. But if he’s in your arms, he’s more confident and more interested in relating with other people.

Language:Four month old babies start to comprehend basic sounds. He also starts to create sounds such as “mama” or “dada”, though not yet attached with a parent. He also starts to actively participate in imitating games. You can encourage his communication skills by imitating his face and sounds. By this, he will recognize the importance of language and starts to distinguish that what he says actually makes a difference.

As you can see, there are a lot of developments happening with your baby lately! Try to encourage him in developing such skills in order to learn and interact with his surroundings more. If he’s still not able to do the things listed above, you should not worry! Babies’ developments differ from one to another! Just make sure to visit your doctor if you’d noticed any differences in your baby’s activities.
