5 Breastfeeding Recommendations

Breastfeeding is the most beautiful and natural thing you can do with your baby.  It helps them grow up big and strong and it’s all because of you!  You give them nutrients that other things can’t and you also have that special bond between the two of you once you start.  If you’re starting to breastfeed now or in the near future, here are some tips and recommendations to consider when doing so.

5 Breastfeeding Recommendations:

Diet:  First of all, you need to realize that your baby is getting all it’s vitamins and nutrients strictly from you!  Make sure you’re eating a diet that is well balanced and one that comes as close as you can to the food pyramid.  Fruits, vegetables, protein, grains and more are all important for you and your baby!

Fluids:  Since we’re giving away so much fluid to our baby, it is important that we drink several glasses of water a day.  Before we were breastfeeding it was recommended that we have (8) 8oz glasses each day, now experts say to increase that to 12 glasses a day.  This is important because we have the chance of getting dehydrated much quicker now.

Position:  You want to make sure you position yourself comfortably with pillows supporting your back, your arms and your baby.  Once you’ve found a comfortable position you can start.  Just make sure there are burp clothes near by and resting on your lap to avoid any messes.

Encourage:  You also want to make your baby feel as comfortable as possible so they feel safe and secure.  Now, make sure they look comfortable and begin by tickling their chin so that they open their mouth wide enough to latch on.  Talk softly to them and rub them.

Time:  We always wonder if they’re getting enough milk.  To make sure, you should do at least 10-15 minutes on each breast.  Then, make sure they are having at least 6 wet diapers each day, along with some dirty ones.  This shows you they are hydrated and getting enough throughout the day!

If you’re planning on or already breastfeeding your baby, congratulations!  You’ve made a great decision for them now and for them in the future.  Just consider a few of these tips and you’ll be off to a great start and bond with your baby!
