By the time your baby reaches six weeks, you will see a lot of changes. Your baby’s body may be well formed when you gave birth, but take note that his/her systems remain underdeveloped. The maturation of the various systems in his/her body will pave the way for their holistic development.
During this stage, your baby’s milestones may include the following:
- Your baby is able to move some parts of his/her body independently.
For instance, when you hold him/her, your baby can lift their head. You will also see that every time you place your child on his/her stomach during “tummy time,” they can easily lift their head and chest. Not only that, when lying on their stomach, your baby can also turn his/her from side to side. Your baby can even wiggle and kick their legs.
When you hold your baby in your arms, try to let his/her head drop back for even a few centimeters and you would notice that they will respond by stretching out their arms as if to hold on to something. Definitely consider getting a Boppy Pillow if you haven’t already. These are great and help them get into many different positions they normally wouldn’t be able to get into on their own.
- Your baby can easily grasp just about anything.
By this time, your 6 week old baby is already able to open and close his/her hands and tighten their fists. With that, just place anything in front of them- a finger, toy, baby bottle, or rattle and he/she will readily grasp it!
When you place a finger in your child’s palm or on the sole of his/her foot, your baby will already be able to flex their fingers or curl their toes.
- Your baby can already respond to certain sounds.
When your baby hears your voice, he/she can turn their head towards you. Even a rattling sound of a toy or music will already catch your baby’s attention.
- Your baby’s sense of sight improves.
As your baby’s sight matures, he/she will already be able to turn their head when exposed to bright light. Your baby will be able to follow a moving object or person with his/her eyes although within a limited line of vision. When you smile, your baby may be able to return that smile. Amazing, isn’t it?
TIP: Consider getting a baby carrier! These are great and allow them to explore a whole new world from a whole new level.
- Your baby will be able to make certain sounds.
He/she can make cooing or gurgling sounds. Aside from that, your baby will be able to make crying sounds (or through their facial expression) to communicate hunger or any discomfort.
- Highly recommended toy
There are several great toys on the market, but one toy is very beneficial to your baby of this age. If you haven’t considered getting a play mat yet, consider it now! These are great, allow your baby to learn, explore different sights, sounds, colors and more!
