Best Solid Food for Babies

When your baby reaches 4 to 6 months old, she begins to become interested with what you eat. She eventually starts to grab the food you’re eating and starts to stuff it in her mouth. As this is the first sign that she is ready for solid food, you may still need to be careful with the food you are about to feed her.

Her first solid food should not contain lumps and must be very smooth. It must be prepared thoroughly so that your baby won’t have a hard time digesting the food. It should have more liquid in it and try not to introduce new recipes abruptly for you to know if there are allergic reactions with some types of foods. Below are the types of solid foods that can be served for first time babies.

  • Cereals: Cereals are one of the typical foods that can be served to babies who are just beginning to eat solid foods. This is considered to be the best food that can be served to them. When choosing a baby cereal, consider a single-grain variety like rice, barley or oat. Try not to give your baby wheat first as it might have allergic reactions to your baby for now. You can do this by preparing a small amount of cereal and mix it with liquid, preferably breast milk, formula or water. Try producing a creamy combination and don’t try to sweeten the mixture by adding mashed bananas, applesauce or even juice. If you start giving your child sweetened foods, she will soon begin to ask for everything sweet.
  • Vegetables: Vegetables are great foods for your baby and they are packed with nutrition too. They are even less likely to trigger allergies. You can begin with preparing yellow or orange veggies like sweet potatoes and carrots. Soon after, you can then start giving your baby green veggies such as peas, spinach and string beans, since they have stronger flavors. Most babies don’t like the taste of veggies but don’t stop trying. Just keep on introducing the same food until they begin to accept it.
  • Fruit: Another healthy variety for your baby to consume are fruits. Not only that they are nutritious, they are also easily digestible, and delicious too! You can try preparing mashed bananas by chopping it finely, or try applesauce, peaches or pears. Go with jarred fruits and make sure they are made for babies. This will ensure you that the nutritional content of the food meet your baby’s needs.
