Breastfeeding vs. Formula

868023_newborn_drinking_milkWhen we have a little one coming along, the question “Should I breastfeed or use formula?” often comes up.  They are both great options, and will allow your baby to grow up strong and healthy.  But, is one better than the other?  Does one have more benefits, and which one is easier?  Everyone is different, and has their own opinion, but lets take a look at the difference between the two.

Thoughts About Breastfeeding

  • Breastfeeding can save anywhere from $1,000-$3,500 per year depending on which formula you would have bought.
  • It is known to be more convenient.  When you’re there, your baby can eat.
  • A lot of moms say that it is the best way to bond with your baby.
  • Breast milk is known to be more nutritious than formula.  It has certain disease fighting antibodies that help kill off bad germs, diseases, etc.
  • People say that breastfeeding is very rewarding.  Not only is it a great way to bond, but it feels good to be able to give your baby what they need to grow up big and strong!
  • If you know that you’re going to be busy later, or you’d like to allow others to feed your baby, you can always pump your milk using a breast pump.  Then, you can save it, store it, and feed it to your baby when you’d like.
  • It can be uncomfortable for some women to breastfeed.  It is somewhat exposing, so pumping is a great option for bottles when it comes to going out in public.

NOTE:  Not every woman is able to provide enough breast milk.  If you’re one of them, don’t feel ashamed because that is what formula is made for!

Thoughts About Formula

  • We all hate to buy formula because it is so expensive!  One can these days can cost $30!
  • When we don’t breastfeed we need to buy bottles, nipples, etc.  This is even more to buy, meaning it’s even more expensive.
  • When our baby is hungry and is screaming because they want food now, we have to wait to get a clean bottle, make a bottle, warm it up, etc.  This can be considered a hassle when you can just breastfeed instantly.
  • Formula may be better if your little one is hungry in public, and you don’t want to have to stop what you’re doing to breastfeed them.
  • Formula is a great option if you’re not producing enough breast milk.
  • Formula can also be a great substitute for when you don’t want to breastfeed.

As you can see, they both have their ups and downs.  It all depends on what means more to you, what doesn’t bother you, and what would be easier for you and your new baby.  They are both great options, what do you think you’re leaning towards?

If you’ve tried breastfeeding or formula feeding your baby and have something to say or share, feel free to leave a comment for other mothers to read!  Sometimes it takes some opinions and thoughts of others to help us decide what we want to do!

TIP:  All in all, if you’re able to breastfeed at least give it a shot!  The worst thing that can happen is that you don’t like it and switch to formula.  At least you could say you tried!
