Breastmilk Coming in – When?

Once we have our baby, our body changes tremendously!  We instantly feel the love for our baby, our hormones are out of wack and we feel emotional, our body starts to slowly fall back into place and our breastmilk starts to come in.

Most women get excited to know that their breastmilk will come in and that their breasts will be larger, but the pain of having them expand is something we aren’t too familiar with.  When our breastmilk comes in, it is usually 3-5 days after we deliver our baby.  It takes our body time to kick in and start producing the milk.

Although, don’t be confused with colostrum which is milk that we start producing since month 4.  This milk is with us from month 4 until our other milk starts to come in.  It is also known as “liquid gold” and is great for our baby!  So, most likely once you’ve delivered your baby and you’re home from the hospital, your milk supply will start to come in.  Try to feed your baby as much as you can right away simply because it will allow our breasts to know to keep producing more.

You may feel a lot of pain with this when it comes in.  Your breasts will feel engorged, swollen and very tender.  The best thing you can do to relieve the pain is to breastfeed.  Let your body get rid of the pressure while letting your breasts know to keep filling up.

If you’re new to breastfeeding and would like more advice, I highly recommend getting a breastfeeding book.  You can learn from the experts and learn helpful tips and tricks to healthier, more efficient breastfeeding.  Also, I highly recommend getting a breast pump.  This is a great way to store your milk for later and a great way to relive the pressure if your baby isn’t feeding well that day!
