Connecticut Car Seat Laws

Although Connecticut is just a tiny state on the U.S. map, there are still laws when it comes to your child’s car seat.  If you didn’t know already, car seat laws vary from state to state, therefore it is important you check out your actual state’s laws.

When you learn the car seat laws for the state you live in, you’re increasing your child’s safety, avoiding your chances of getting a traffic violation, and you’re reducing your risk of a fine.  So, if you live in the state of Connecticut, get familiar now.  Here are the laws you must follow below.

Connecticut Car Seat Laws:

  • If your baby is less than 20 lbs, and one year of age, they must be in the rear-facing position.  This additional time will allow their neck to develop properly so they have better head support.
  • Also, if your child is between the ages of 1-6, and less than 60 lbs, they must remain in a car seat.
  • Booster seats may be used, but they may only be used if they have a shoulder and lap belt.  Just a lap belt is not ok if they are less than 60 lbs, and younger than the age of 6.
  • Seat belts are also permissible between the ages of 7-15, and with a weight of less than 60 lbs.
  • If you fail to follow these laws, your first offense may result in a fine of $60.

NOTES:

  • If your child has exceeded the weight and height limits on their car seat, they must be upgraded to the next level.
  • You should never buy a car seat that is used.  This is dangerous, and may result to injury of your child.

This is just a brief summary of Connecticut’s car seat laws.  Keep in mind they may change over time, therefore it is your responsibility to make sure you are updated with any changes.
