A lot of us dread going to the dentist. Whether we don’t want to pay for that expensive bill, are afraid we have cavities or we just fear going to the dentist, it is important to put our fears aside during pregnancy. Going to the dentist while pregnant is important. We want to make sure our teeth are being taken care of, and that we get them checked over by a doctor every 6 months. Dental Care During Pregnancy:
Is it safe to get your teeth cleaned while pregnant?
First of all the answer is yes! It is highly recommended. We lose a lot of calcium in our teeth because of the baby. Therefore we want to make sure they’re still strong and that we’re cavity free.
Is floride recommended during pregnancy?
Floride during pregnancy is highly recommended. Since we lose calcium during pregnancy we want to make sure our teeth are strong. It is good to get on a regular basis at the dentist but highly recommended while you’re pregnant!
Are x-rays safe during pregnancy?
X-rays are known to be safe after the first trimester of pregnancy simply because they block your stomach with a thick cover. Not to mention, a dentist wouldn’t do anything he/she didn’t think was safe. Although, if you dont’ really need x-rays and they can wait, I would recommend waiting.
Can you get cavities filled during pregnancy?
Yes, you can get cavities filled. So, if you have a while until your due date and you’re past the first trimester, it is best to just get them over with before they get worse.
Are crowns and root canals safe during pregnancy?
Most dentists will recommend that you do wait until after you give birth. Although, if you can’t wait for a crown or root canal and it needs to be done right away it is safe. Ask your dentist about your current situation and see where they take you.
Is teeth whitening safe while pregnant?
If you ask your OB/GYN and your dentist they will most likely tell you no. Wait it out for the 9 months before you put any bleaching chemicals in your mouth or on your teeth.
As you can see, it is important to take good care of your teeth during pregnancy. Floss on a daily basis, limit your sweets, brush at least twice each day and be sure to get your regular routine check ups with your dentist!
