Different Kinds of Car Seats

Are you looking for the right kind of car seat for your little one?  When we think about buying anything for our child; we give it an extra thought before we buy it.  We want to make sure that everything we give them will be something that is safe for them, and is something that will get the job done.  At the same time, we want what is best for our child.

If you’re buying a car seat for the first time, or you’re just not familiar with the different kinds that are out there, continue to read below to see what kind of options are out there for you.

Different Kinds of Car Seats:

  • Infant: First of all, there is the infant car seat.  This car seat is specifically for infants, and is made for birth until approximately 20 pounds, maybe some even up to 35 pounds.  Also, this car seat is designed to ride in your car for the rear facing position.  So, never turn this car seat around forward facing.  Your infant car seat can last anywhere from six to twelve months depending on the growth rate of your baby.
  • Convertible: The convertible car seat is used starting from birth until your child outgrows the car seat.  So, if you’re looking to get more use out of the car seat for your money, you may want to consider a convertible.  These can be used as forward facing or in rear facing positions, but it depends on the weight of your child.  Each car seat may be different, so you will want to read the owners manual before you take your little one for a ride.

The only bad thing about the convertible car seat is that you can’t use it as an infant carrier, and they’re not portable.  This means, you’ll have to take your baby in and out of the seat instead of just carrying the carrier around.

  • Convertible with shield: If you’re looking for a car seat, and you come across this one, it is pretty rare.  These aren’t made much anymore, and a lot of them have been recalled.  If you’re looking for a car seat, and you’re interested in this one, make sure there wasn’t a recall on the particular seat beforehand.
  • Booster: Booster car seats are great because they are used for toddlers.  You no longer need a car seat, but instead a booster seat.  The minimum weight requirement varies from 30-40 pounds, depending on the one you choose.  What’s nice about booster seats is that you can seat your child safely in one all the way up to 80lbs!

There are a few different types of car seats on the market.  It is important that you find the one that fits your child’s needs, and one that is made specifically for your child.  So, before you shop and purchase one, make sure you find which one will be best for your child.
