When we find out that we’re pregnant, we realize how careful we need to be for the next 9 months. We need to learn what we need to avoid and what we need to start doing in order to have a healthy baby. Once you go and see your OB/GYN for the first time he/she will give you a list of things to avoid when it comes to eating and drinking. One of the things on the list is avoiding caffeine. If you’re not sure what your limits are and what the effects are, continue reading below.
Can I drink caffeine during pregnancy?
Yes, you don’t have to give up caffeine all together. Although, if you were someone that was drinking 3-4 cups of coffee daily and a a few cokes each day, you will have a problem. You’ll have to limit your intake to around 8 oz per day. It’s better to not drink it at all, but for some it’s hard to just go cold turkey. So, don’t exceed 8 oz each day.
What are the effects?
When you drink caffeine, you are risking your chances of having a smaller baby for a few different reasons. Having too much caffeine cuts down on the blood flow to the placenta. What’s important about avoiding that is that the placenta is where your baby gets its oxygen and nutrients, so if you’re cutting down the blood flow, your baby will be getting less of the things that are required for them to grow and stay healthy.
There have been many studies that show women who drink more caffeine than recommended have had a higher chance of having a miscarriage. So, it’s all up to you and what you’re in taking caffeine wise each day.
As you can see, drinking caffeine isn’t the wisest choice while you’re pregnant. There are so many nutrients that your baby needs so try to fill up on the important things like skim milk, water (not tap water) and juice to get most of your vitamins!
