Epidural vs. Giving Natural Birth

Once we reach the third trimester, we start to think about how the birth of our child will be.  It comes across our mind more and more and is something that we want to plan for.  A lot of people have what they call a “birth plan”, yet others take it minute by minute while it’s happening.

If you’re looking to find the pros and cons of both an epidural and giving birth naturally, continue reading below!  It’s great to inform yourself ahead of time.

Epidural –

Pros:

  • You won’t feel an ounce of pain.
  • You will still feel the urge to push.
  • It is common to have more energy since you’re not worn out from the pain.
  • Contractions won’t be painful anymore.

Cons:

  • If you don’t like shots, you may not want to get it.
  • It can be painful to get.
  • You may feel disappointed for not doing natural.

Natural Birth –

Pros:

  • You will feel a great accomplishment of sticking it out and going natural.
  • You won’t have to worry about getting medication or shots.

Cons:

  • As the contractions get stronger and closer together, you will be in intense pain.
  • You will be able to feel everything that is going on – which can be painful.
  • You may feel tearing or ripping.
  • You may be worn out from labor pains.

There are pros and cons to both an epidural and giving birth naturally.  Labor is a tough thing, that is why it is called labor – it’s work!  You never know how long you’re going to be in it, how painful it’s going to be and how you will handle the pain.  When I was giving birth I figured why be in such pain if I don’t have to be?  You want your birth to be an enjoyable and memorable thing that is beautiful, not painful and stressful.  Everyone is different handles pain differently, just remember that both are okay!
