How much should I feed them at a time?

If you’re formula feeding, babies usually take 4 ounces at a time.  Now, if you’re breastfeeding, you will want to feed (alternating breasts) until your baby is satisfied.  Once they are satisfied, you will wait until they are fussy for a bottle or feed them in about 2-3 hours.

It is also said that most babies eat 2.5 ounces per pound they weigh.  So, for example, if your baby weighs 10 pounds, they will most likely need around 25 ounces eat day.

Can I give my baby rice cereal or solid foods?

At this time you may not give your baby rice cereal and/or solid foods.  Your baby’s digestive tract needs more developing, therefore they shouldn’t be given anything other formula or breast milk.  Most babies start to eat rice cereal and other foods when they’re around 4-6 months of age.  It is important you get the OK from their pediatrician before you give anything other than formula and/or breast milk.

What if my baby’s appetite is small?

If your baby has a small appetite and isn’t eating 4ounces at a time, you will want to see how much their consuming throughout the whole day.  At some points they may down a whole 4 ounce bottle, while at other times they’re not that hungry.  As always, if ever you have concern for your baby, make an appointment with their pediatrician.

What if my baby is always hungry?

Sometimes our babies seem fussier than usual, and the only thing that makes them happy is by breastfeeding or getting a bottle.  If they’re crying because they’re still hungry, go ahead and feed them!  Babies grow at a tremendous rate and therefore they have many growth spurts.  Your baby will soon go back to their regular feeding pattern once this growth spurt passes.

Sometimes you will find that your baby just wants a pacifier.  At this age, they still have a sucking reflex that soothes them.  So, they may not be hungry, but just want a pacifier instead!

As you’ve already noticed, babies need several supplies.  Here are some must have breastfeeding supplies, as well as the most popular baby bottles.  If you’re not breastfeeding, you’ll soon see how quickly you go through baby bottles, so make your life easier and add a few extras!

As mentioned above, all babies vary.  Your baby may be going through a growth spurt and may need more than another baby close to their age.  Give them a bottle every few hours, and monitor how many wet diapers they have, as well as how much they’re eating.
