From the minute we find out we’re pregnant our mind is going crazy. We wonder how far along we are already, wonder what the gender will be, and if we’ll experience any symptoms coming up. There is a lot to learn, and a lot of neat things we want to inform ourselves on. One of them being how much weight we’re going to gain during pregnancy. It is different for everyone, but below is a way of breaking down how much you’ll gain throughout your pregnancy.
How Much Weight Should You Gain?
First of all, you will want to check out what your BMI is. If you are underweight, a healthy weight, or you’re overweight, the number will vary from person to person.
Underweight (BMI below 18.5): Your OB/GYN will most likely recommend that you gain 28-40lbs.
Healthy weight (BMI 18.5-24.9): You will gain roughly 25-35 lbs.
Overweight (BMI 25-29.9): You will want to avoid gaining too much since you don’t want to make your weight more of an issue in the future. It is recommended that you gain 15-25 lbs.
Twins: If you’re having twins you’re definitely going to gain more than the average person. You should gain 37-45 lbs if you’re a healthy weight, and less if you’re overweight or obese to start with.
Where Does The Weight Go?
- Baby: 8 lbs on average
- Placenta: 2-3 lbs
- Amniotic fluid: 2-3 lbs
- Breast tissue: 2-3 lbs
- Blood supply: 4 lbs
- Fat stored: 5-9 lbs
- Uterus increase: 2-5 lbs
Total: 25-35 lbs
As you can see, there is quite a bit of weight that you’re going to put on, but that is all normal and healthy (as long as you stick within the guidelines.) Just be sure to take care of yourself , eat a healthy diet, and keep up with your doctor’s appointments to make sure you’re gaining the correct amount of weight.
