How to Prevent Diaper Rash

475120_newborn_baby_177Diaper rash is a terrible thing that really irritates our baby’s skin.  It is hard to sleep with it, and can be very uncomfortable during the day.  If you want to make sure your baby doesn’t end up getting diaper rash, you may want to consider a few of these tips to help prevent it from happening!

Dry – Always make sure their bottom is dry.  Sometimes you will notice they only go to the bathroom a little bit, but you need to make sure that little bit isn’t irritating their skin and causing it.

Change diapers – Once you know your baby has gone to the bathroom, you want to make sure you change their diaper.  Don’t put this on hold, but instead once you can tell change them into a clean diaper.  This may even mean waking up the middle of the night to make sure they still have a dry and clean diaper.

Ointment – If your baby is prone to diaper rash, it is a good idea to put ointment on their skin in between each diaper change.  Coat a thin layer of ointment on their bottom so that if the diaper rubs against it, it doesn’t irritate it.

Loose or bigger – You may also want to consider getting a little bigger diapers.  The extra space allows air flow to get to your baby’s skin.  If the diapers are too big, you can consider not tightening it so much, but to let it be a little looser.

No diaper – If nothing seems to work, you should really let your baby go without a diaper for a few hours each day.  After they just went to the bathroom, wipe them and let them run around without one.  The best way to treat diaper rash sometimes is through air exposure.  So, let them be diaper-free for a few hours a day.
