How to Reduce Your Child’s Plastic Risk

There are a lot of dangerous things out there in this world.  It almost seems like everything has some type of danger to it actually.  Although, one thing that you may want to look out for is plastic.  Plastic can have a lot of dangers for your baby.  There was a study that said polycarbonate plastics in baby formulas, baby bottles, water bottles and food storage containers can have Bisphenol A (BPA), which doubles the risk of heart disease, diabetes and liver problems in adults.

If you’re looking to try and keep your child safe from these danger chemicals there are several different ways you can do so.  The FDA has yet to limit the use of BPA, but experts say you can avoid it with in these few ways:

  • Only buy and use baby bottles that are BPA free.
  • When you can, use glass or stainless steel containers for storing or holding liquids and baby food.
  • Try to reduce your use of canned food.
  • Do not microwave polycarbonate containers.  Why?  Simply because polycarbonate can break down over time due to the use of high temperatures.
  • If you’re wanting to look out and avoid BPA, you can check on the bottom of the plastic container or bottle if it has a #7.

Although BPA can be dangerous, it is one of the many things you just want to avoid whenever possible.  Don’t worry though, there are several companies out there that are working against this and actually label BPA free on the outsides of their products.  It is a great thing that you’re keeping an eye out for your little one!

One of my favorite baby bottles to use that is BPA free are Dr. Browns bottles.  These bottles have excellent ratings, are some of the safest to use and are highly recommended by other parents, including myself!
