How to Save on the Cost of Childbirth

Children are an expensive thing.  Ever since pregnancy, the start up costs to have a baby and until they’re 18 years old, they will cost a great amount of money.  What’s most expensive though is the actual arrival and delivery of bringing them into this world.  If you’re planning on having a baby in the near future, and you’re looking to find out the cheapest way of bringing them here, here are a few ways to save on your child’s birth.

How to Save on the Cost of Childbirth:

Insurance:  First of all, if you have insurance through your work, or even if you have to pay out of pocket each month, get insurance that covers maternity.  A lot of people are surprised when they find out their insurance doesn’t cover it.  Most insurance companies make you be with them before your birth, so if you can plan it do so!

Natural:  Having as natural of a childbirth as possible will help lower the costs of the birth.  Avoiding things like an epidural, c-section and staying at the hospital for a long period of time will help lower the costs of your birth and visit.

Doula:  You may want to look into doulas.  Having a natural at home birth with the assistance of a doula can really save you some money.  Look into this and be sure to compare the prices as well as think of the pros and cons of going this route.

Negotiate:  If your baby wasn’t planned, and you can’t get onto a maternity coverage now, don’t panic.  You can have the baby at the hospital, wait until all the bills come and then negotiate a price with the hospital.  A lot of people don’t know this, but if you want to save money you can get “cash discounts”.  Offer to pay cash or put it on credit when the bills comes in exchange for a deal.  Sometimes you can get up to 50% off your bill!

Having a baby is an expensive thing, so try to do all you can in order to save a few pennies.  These pennies saved will help tremendously down the road with their upcoming costs!
