How to Swaddle a Newborn

When your baby is born, it might be very unsettling for her to experience a whole new world, especially since she was used to the proximity of the womb. One way of helping her adjust to this new world is to wrap her snugly in a blanket, making her feel more secure. When they’re wrapped tight, they feel safe, and like they’re in the womb once again.

Swaddling helps your baby a lot because while they are young, they are still not used with their own muscle movement and they become uncomfortable without reason at all. Swaddling her snugly will prevent her from making unnecessary moves, and enabling her to sleep well. This should also help colicky babies to cure and stop them from crying by making them more relaxed and comfortable with their position. When they are properly swaddled, they might even fall asleep soundly.

To allow your baby to have good night sleep, swaddling her tightly might only be what they need. Follow the steps below to help you properly swaddle your baby.

  1. Lay a blanket that is large enough to contain your baby perfectly in a diamond shape. Fold the upper corner and place your baby on the blanket, placing his head just above the edge.  Need some swaddling blankets?  Check these out!
  2. Have the left side of the blanket be pulled across your baby’s chest, making sure his right arm is close to his body, and snugly tuck it under his opposite arm.
  3. Pull the other side of the blanket across your baby’s chest and snugly tuck it underneath.
  4. Check if the swaddle is secure enough to prevent him from creating unnecessary movements. And make sure that your baby is comfortable enough with the swaddle, making her feel more relaxed as she tries to get to sleep. Pulling tightly, but not too tight is also key.

Swaddling is a way to keep your colicky baby from being uncomfortable, so the main goal for swaddling is to make your baby more at ease and contented. However, do not try to wrap him when the weather is warm because it might cause SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). Just try to keep the swaddle snug and fit so that your baby won’t try to get out from the blanket. Also, make sure that the blanket you are using is not too warm or too cold so that your baby will feel more comfortable.
