Since our children grow so quickly, it is important to update their car seat to suite and meet their safety needs. You can do that a few different ways.
Age and Size Appropriate
Always remember that there are laws regarding your baby car seat. One of them being whether to seat them backwards or forwards based on their age and weight.
You will also want to research your state and government laws before purchasing a new car seat. It can save you money in the long run and will also keep your child safer. There are some that will grow with your child, such as a raising headrest. Although, don’t expect your car seat you used when they were 6 months old to still be good at 3 years old.
Does it work with your car?
All car seats that I know of on the market are suitable to use a belt strap to hold in. But it is important to know your car. Cars with back shoulder straps require that you use a metal alignment hook to pull the upper strap down to the lower. Be aware as to whether or not your car has a latch system and only use manufacturer installed latch systems. Using the hooks to hook your car seat to just anywhere in the car could leave undesirable results for your child in the event of an accident.
Cleaning
Take your car seat out often, and wash the cover and the straps. Not only does this keep it cleaner for your child, but also more comfortable. Imagine sitting on a seat full of cereal for weeks before noticed. You will also help keep those unwanted germs away by leaving it clean and ready to use. Just make sure you install it properly like it was before.
