Illinois Car Seat Laws

Keeping your child safe should be your main concern as a parent.  The everyday roads that we drive are dangerous enough, so without following the safety procautions of car seat laws, you’re only asking to violate the law and endanger your child at the same time.

If you live in the state of Illinois, here is the list of car seat laws you must follow as your child’s guardian.

Illinois Car Seat Laws:

  • Your child must remain in a car seat until the age of at least 7 years old.
  • An adult safety belt must also be worn between the ages of 8-15.  Once your child has reached the age of 15, it is no longer necessary in the back seat of the car.  Although, of course, they should always wear it no matter what.
  • If you don’t follow these laws above, your first offense will cost you on average $50.

NOTES:

  • Your baby should remain rear-facing in their car seat until they’re both one year of age AND 20 lbs.  This will allow their neck time to develop and strengthen.
  • Be sure to take a look at your child’s car seat, and make sure they still fit the requirements of it.  Your child’s weight and height should match the requirements on the car seat.  Our children grow fast, so it’s important to always make sure they’re in a proper car seat.
  • Always avoid buying used car seats.  Car seats should only be bought new.  It is dangerous to buy used ones simply because you don’t know the history of it, if it’s been recalled, if it’s expired or even if it’s been in an accident.

As you can see, Illinois’ car seat laws are pretty simple and easy to follow.  Just always make sure you’re looking out for your child’s best interest when it comes to safety.
