When we have a child, it’s important that we look out for their safety on a regular basis.  Everyday activities such as swimming, running around the yard, and even riding in the car can be dangerous, but if we take the time to think of safety first, they don’t have to be as dangerous.

One thing you can do to enhance the safety of your child is to check out your state’s car seat laws.  Car seat laws vary from state to state, and can be very different from one another, so it’s important you know the laws for the actual state you live in.  If you don’t know the car seat laws for the state of Kansas already, now would be a great time to familiarize yourself!

Kansas Car Seat Laws:

• All children 3 and younger must be a child car seat.
• If your child is 4-7 years of age, weighs less than 80 pounds, and is less than 57 inches tall, they must be in a child restraint or booster car seat.
• All children who are ages 8-13, and children 4-7, who weigh more than 80 pounds, and are taller than 57 inches must wear a safety belt.
• If you do not follow these laws, it can result in a fine of $60 for the first offense.

NOTES:

• It’s best to keep your baby rear-facing for as long as possible.
• Always make sure your child fits the weight and height requirements for their car seat properly.
• Never buy a car seat that has been “used”.  It may have several dangers such as being expired, recalled or previously in an accident.
• You should always wear your seat belt regardless of your age.
