Louisiana Car Seat Laws

Did you know that each state in the U.S. has their own car seat laws?  When you follow your state’s laws, you are protecting your little one from a car accident, are eliminating your risk of a traffic violation, and you’re avoiding the risk of a fine.  Some of these fines can be up to $500!

If you live in the state of Louisiana, here are the car seat laws you must follow.

Louisiana Car Seat Laws:

  • They must be rear-facing for one year and 20 lbs.
  • They should be forward-facing from 1-3 years old and 20-39 lbs.
  • If they are 4-5 years old and weigh between 40-60 lbs, they need a booster car seat.
  • Adult safety belts are also permissible for the ages of 6-12, as well as children under 60 lbs.
  • If you don’t follow these laws, you are putting yourself at risk for a $100 fine.

NOTES:

  • To ensure the safe of your baby, you should keep them rear-facing until they’ve reached the age of one year AND have reached 20 lbs.  This will allow time for the neck to develop.
  • Never buy used car seats.  These can be recalled, expired or could have previously been in an accident.
  • Always make sure your child fits the requirements for their car seat.  If they’ve exceeded the weight and height limits, it is time to get them a new car seat that is the next level.
