Most Common Times for Baby Growth Spurts

A growth spurt is a time when babies grow, and often need more milk than usual. This is due to the developments happening in them. Also, increased activities such as learning to crawl, walk and talk are several activities that make them hungrier than usual. Though this may be last only for a short time, it may be a bit troubling since a few cries and low moods can be expected from your baby.

When do most growth spurts take place?

Growth spurts usually occur anytime in the first year. Your baby may have an initial spurt from 1 to 3 weeks after birth, between 6 and 8 weeks, and then another growth spurt can also usually be encountered at 3 months, 6 months, and months old. Although all babies are different, these are probably the most common times. Though growth spurt can be a bit disturbing sometimes, it only lasts for a couple of days, and then your baby will be back to the usual shortly.

What are the signs?

One sign that indicates a growth spurt is happening is when your baby keeps fussing for more milk.  When babies have a growth spurt, they are often more tired and hungry than usual. Another sign is that they’ll be awake in the middle of the night when they usually aren’t.

Older babies also wake up earlier from naps. Your baby may also be irritable at times especially if your breast milk has dried up and he wants more.

Since your baby is hungrier during a growth spurt, it is crucial that you drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated so that you can breastfeed more often.  Here are some ways to make more breastmilk.  Also, avoid keeping yourself too busy so that you are able to keep stress down and able to focus more on your baby’s needs.
