North Dakota Car Seat Laws

One thing thing that the state of North Dakota has in common with all the other U.S. states is that it has car seat laws just like the rest of them.  Car seat laws are different for each state in the U.S., and if not followed properly, your child won’t be as safe in the car, could enable you to get a fine, points on your record, and lastly, get you a traffic violation.

Now, as a parent, our number one priority should always be keeping our child safe.  That goes for when they’re at their friend’s house, in the car, or simply at home.  So, if you live in the state of North Dakota, here are the laws you must follow as a parent or legal guardian.

North Dakota Car Seat Laws:

  • If your child is 6 years or younger, less than 80 lbs, or shorter than 57″, they must remain in a child car seat.
  • Your child must also wear a safety belt between the ages of 7-17 years old.  If there is no shoulder belt available in the car, they must be at least strapped in a lap belt.
  • If you fail to follow these laws above, it may result in a fine of $25 for the first offense.

NOTES:

  • You should always keep your baby rear-facing for as long as possible.  The ideal age to turn them forward-facing would be at least one year of age AND 20 lbs.
  • Once your child has exceeded the weight and height limits for their car seat, they must be upgraded to the next level as soon as possible.
  • Never buy a car seat that is “used”.  You don’t know if it’s been in an accident, if it’s expired, or even worse, recalled due to unsafe conditions.

This is just a brief summary for North Dakota’s car seat laws.  Always keep your eyes open for these laws because they may change over time.
