Most women are ready to give birth by the end of 40 weeks. During this time, you feel mixed emotions- excitement, anxiety, etc. You can hardly wait to see your little angel and hold him in your arms! However, you may also feel some discomfort and show signs of pre-labor, such as the following:
Lightening or dropping
You may feel that your baby drops deeper into your pelvis and your breathing gets easier. For first time moms, this may occur 2-4 weeks before they begin to labor. For women who have experienced giving birth, this may or may not happen until they go through active labor. It’s great relief to us because our baby isn’t so crammed in our rib cage anymore. We can breathe easier, and they are getting ready to come out!
Lower back pain
Some pregnant women will feel the contractions in their lower back, just before their belly. This may cause some discomfort. Sometimes, the contractions will come in waves. For women who experience a lot of painful or heavy contractions (more than normal), I suggest you consult your OB-gynecologist.
TIP: Back labor can be very painful! Have your spouse rub your back, lay on the floor flat, or consider sitting on a birthing ball to do some stretches.
Changes in bowel patterns
Pregnant women who are nearing their due date would observe that there are changes in their bowel patterns. You may have more loose bowels. This usually happens when contractions occur or they may start a few days before the contractions. Take note that your body has a natural capacity to cleanse itself before you give birth. This is a great thing, so make sure you go to the bathroom when you have to, don’t hold it in!
Increasing discharge
You may notice that you have more vaginal discharges as labor nears. An increase in the secretion of vaginal mucus is normal. This is usually clear or may resemble an egg white, or may have a pinkish tinge. Just keep in mind, this is different from losing your mucus plug. You will know when you lose your mucus plug because it is a thick discharge that continue to come out.
More contractions
You may feel an increase in Braxton Hicks contractions. This kind of contraction is usually painless and you will feel a temporary tightening in the abdomen. But as you get closer to your due date, you may encounter more of this. Sometimes, they get painful and may continue for a few hours or days.
Leaking fluid
Your bag of water may rupture when your labor approaches. This may be a small leak or a large gush of fluid. Once this happens, you should consult your doctor and go to the hospital as soon as possible!
As you can see, there are a few different sings of pre-labor. Labor is different for every woman, and each one will experience different things and different times. Take this time to rest and catch up on sleep. You will be exhausted these next couple days so sleep in while you can!
