Pregnancy – Third Trimester

943776_boy_or_girlFinally, the last trimester of pregnancy!  This is an exciting time because we are larger than ever, our baby is showing, and the date is coming closer and closer.  Although this may be an exciting time, we may be getting a little impatient, and just want the date to come sooner.  The third trimester is filled with all different types of things that are going on.  Continue to read below to find out what is happening in your belly.

Third Trimester for baby:

  • The third trimester starts when the 28th week begins until birth.
  • Your babies skin will go from a reddish color to pink, and they will be gaining more and more weight.  (That may be why you are gaining more and more as well.)
  • From the 28th weeks your baby will be about 15 inches long, and around 2-3 pounds growing more and more each day.
  • There may be a lot of movement from your baby, as they become more active.
  • The organs keep improving, and the placenta provides antibodies.
  • Their bones are fully developed during this trimester.
  • They can detect light as their pupils dilate and constrict.
  • A full head of hair may be present during this trimester.
  • Fingernails are continuing to grow.
  • At 37 weeks, your baby is considered full term and is ready for the world!
  • Your due date is right around the corner.

Third Trimester for you:

So, you know what is happening with your baby, but what should you expect?  There is a lot that takes place during this trimester.  Also, you’re probably eager to just get the baby out, and bring it home, if only it were that easy.

  • Your cravings may get stronger, and the back pain may start (if it hasn’t already.)
  • The baby will keep getting heavier, which will put more stress on your back.  Also, you may find that it is harder to sleep.  A pregnancy pillow is great for the third trimester and can take some of the weight of your waist and back – making it much easier to sleep.
  • You will also go through what’s called “nesting”.  You will have lots of energy, and want to do last minutes things before your baby arrives, but be sure to save this energy, as you may deliver your baby in the middle of the night and be exhausted!
  • Your water will break.

At the end, you will find that your belly has popped completely!  You may also start getting contractions as you become closer to your delivery.  This isn’t really a “fun” stage, but when the baby comes, it will be more than worth it.

You’re almost there, you’re so close!  Keep a positive attitude, keep eating healthy to make your baby strong, and be sure to get enough sleep.  Before you know it, you will be giving birth, and holding your little one, finally!

TIP:  Make sure that you’re regularly getting monitored by your OB/GYN.  They will make sure your blood pressure, your sugar levels, as well as your baby’s heartbeat are consistant and non problematic.

Also, be sure to continue taking your prenantal vitamins daily.  You, as well as your baby need these to stay healthy.  There have certain nutrients that can lower birth defects, and enhance a healthier pregnancy so these are very imporant!
