Tips to Buying a Safe Crib

Once we find out that we’re pregnant the time is very exciting, yet a little overwhelming.  We want to learn how to be the perfect parents, be prepared, and have everything ready for them in just 9 months.  As you may have realized already, there are a lot of baby items your little one will need to start out.  One of them being a baby crib.

If you’ve never bought a crib before, or have never even looked at them before let us give you some advice.  There are several cribs out there but some are safer than others.  To avoid buying one that is less safe than another one, consider a few of these crib buying tips!

Tips to Buying a Safe Crib:

  • You want to make sure that the corner posts of the crib aren’t higher than 1/16 inch (1-1/2 mm) above the end panel.  This can be dangerous due to your child’s clothing or blanket getting caught on the end of the post.
  • If you’re using bumper pads you want to make sure they are tied or strapped on tightly.  You don’t want any loose material, or any gaps to where your baby could put their head between the pad and the crib posts.
  • Never let there be plastic in your baby’s crib.  This especially goes for plastic laying on the bottom of the crib as a liner.
  • Make sure your mattress support hangers are secured by strong hardware like bolts.
  • If you don’t have bumper pads, make sure the gap between the posts of the crib aren’t wide enough for your baby to get their head stuck.
