I’m going to start by saying that I’ve never personally giving birth naturally in water, but I have given birth. I have done a lot of research to see what this is like because I see this all the time on TV shows and such, and was a little interested. Giving birth is a beautiful thing, and it can be done in several different ways. Whether you are at the hospital with an epidural, at home, in a tub, or in the back of an ambulance, the outcome is all the same and all we can focus on is finally meeting our little one after the long nine months!
If you think you might like to try having a water birth sometime in the future, this is what it’s supposed to be like.
What is a Natural Water Birth Like?
Relaxed: First of all, it is said that water birth is much more relaxed. We’re not sitting in a hospital bed with IVs in our arms. We are sitting in nice warm water breathing through each contraction. The atmosphere is much more calm.
Comforting and less painful: A lot of women say that a water birth is much more comforting. Between the nurses/doulas and our partner by our side, plus the water tub, we feel much more comfortable than in a gown on an uncomfortable bed. Not to mention, a lot of women say the pain is a lot less intense than a regular birth.
Slowed: Although it is much more comfortable and less painful, it is sometimes a slower process. It could be a few extra hours added on top of your labor/
Indescribable: It is hard for women to explain the experience. Although giving birth is all relatively the same, it is also different at the same time! Almost every woman who has tried it in the past has said that is the only way they’d like to have children in the future.
Giving birth is like nothing else. It also can’t be explained very well! Like I said, I’ve never had a water birth, but it sounds quite interesting and a lot of women seem to really enjoy every minute of it! If you’d like to read up on this some more, here are some great water birthing books to consider! I find that the more I read, the more I learn and understand things!
