When we’re looking for a car seat, we want one that has it all. We want the great features, the cute design, a great price, and most importantly a car seat that is safe. There are some car seats out there that will do, but some car seats that tend to go above and beyond. If you’re looking for a safe car seat, find understand what exactly makes them safer than others.
What Makes a Car Seat Safe?
- Understand that there is no safest or best car seat. They are all different and have great features.
- It’s important to understand that you need to face your child rear facing until they’re at least one year of age AND atleast 20 lbs. When you turn them forward facing they must meet both of those requirements. This will make any car seat safer for children!
- You also want a car seat that has a 5 point harness. This will attach at the shoulders, at the hips, and between the legs to secure them even more.
- An overhead sheild is another great thing to have. It is a padded tray-like shield that swings down over your child.
- You want to make sure it has a LATCH system.
- Avoid all used car seats.
- It should meet or even exceed all U.S. safety standards
- Should be side impact tested
- Check for the safety comments it has. If the car seat is known to be very safe, the car seat company will definitely talk highly of it.
