What to Expect at Your First Pregnancy Appointment

1228123_pregnancyAfter seeing our pregnancy test turn to positive a couple times, we are just thrilled!  If you’re been trying to conceive for a long time, or it happened on the first try, this time is very exciting.  There is a lot to look forward to, it brings your relationship with your partner even closer, and the 9 month journey is unforgettable (especially if it’s your first.)

What most women are concerned about is when to schedule your first doctors appointment once you find out, and what the first appointment will be like.  To answer the first question, you should call your OB/GYN once you find out that you’re pregnant.  They will be able to schedule an appointment for you based on a good time or amount of weeks.

As for the appointment itself, the following will take place:

Health history:  First of all, they will want to know what your health history has been like.  Have you had any diseases, problems, surgerys, are you on any medication, those sorts of questions.

Family history:  They will then want to know you and your partners family history.  What runs in the family, do you have family members with genetic diseases, etc.

Vitals:  They will also check your vitals including blood pressure, listen to your heart rate, check your weight and height, and make sure everything looks okay.

Urine sample:  They will also get a urine sample from you as well.  So, be sure to fill up on your liquids beforehand!

Blood test:  A blood test is a must as well.  They want to rule out certain things that could cause problems during a pregnancy.  They will take a couple tubes, do some tests, and give you the results once you return the second time.

Due date:  This is the exciting time!  They will give you an estimated due date for your little one.  They will ask when the first day of your last menstrual cycle was.  Try to figure this out beforehand simply because it can be kind of hard to remember.

Physical examination:  They will also want to give you a pelvic exam.  They want to check for diseases, do a quick swab for testing, and make sure everything looks okay.  They will also be able to tell if you’re pregnant due to how your uterus is sitting.

Educate:  They will want to educate on how to eat correctly, will give you a bunch of prenatal vitamins to try, and will give you a sheet as to what you can do and cannot, and what you can eat and cannot.

Going to your first appointment can be a little nerve wracking at first.  Although, once you leave you will feel much more at ease, have your questions answered, and get a feel as to what is going on better.  There is nothing to worry about.  Just take care of yourself and you’ll be fine!
