What’s Safe During Pregnancy vs. What’s Not

Once we find out we’re pregnant, we’re eager to learn about how our life will change, and the changes we need to make in order to have the healthiest baby possible.  A common question that most pregnant have during pregnancy is whether or not it is safe to do a particular thing.  So, to clear up a little confusion you might be having, we’ll give you a list of what’s safe and what’s not.

Safe:

  • Exercise as long as your heart rate isn’t too high, and you avoid all core exercises like pilates and yoga.
  • Hair coloring is known to be okay, but it just may turn out that you will receive a different color than if you weren’t pregnant.
  • Getting your hair waxed (bikini, legs, face, etc)
  • Facials – as long as there are no strong chemicals.
  • Acrylics – although it’s better to wait until the 2nd trimester.
  • Getting a perm – although like getting color it may not turn out the same.
  • Teeth cleaning at the dentist
  • Hot tubs as long as it’s not 100 degrees or hotter and less than 15 minutes.
  • Wearing high heels
  • Bowling
  • Horseback riding as long it’s a calm horse.
  • Having sex.
  • Job – as long as your heart rate isn’t too high.
  • To clean the house – only with good ventilation
  • X-rays as long as you tell the x-ray tech you’re pregnant so they can tell you if it’s safe or too much.

Unsafe:

  • Drinking caffeine
  • Eating deli meat
  • Fish and other seafood
  • Hotdogs
  • Going tanning/using self tanner
  • Bleaching teeth
  • Getting a tattoo
  • Dieting
  • Smoking/alcohol
  • Changing a cat’s litter
  • Rock concerts – due to smoke, loud sounds, and environment
  • Aspirin

As you can see already, your daily life has changed in a ton of different ways.  Everytime we’re about to do something or eat something it is good to ask ourselves, is this safe to eat?  It’s a good habit to get into, and can really keep you from making any mistakes.  If ever you’re not sure about something ask your doctor the next time you meet!
