Why do Babies Spit up?

Between changing your baby’s diaper, and getting spit up on, we’ve seen it all.  These are the daily activities that come with parenting, and make us even more loving of parents.

Babies tend to spit up here and there, and then there are some babies that actually projectile vomit.  The reasons for that may vary, but if you’re wondering why your baby is spitting up, here are some possible reasons.

Why do Babies Spit up?

  • Your baby has eaten more than they can actually take in, and needs to get rid of the excess milk.
  • They’ve swollowed some air while drinking their bottle, or while breastfeeding.
  • Can happen when your baby burps and brings up fluid.

Is spitting up dangerous to my baby’s health?

As long as your baby is spitting up and not “vomiting”, it is not dangerous.  It happens in young babies, and can happen until they’re done with their bottle feeding.

You should only worry if:

  • Your baby’s not gaining weight.
  • They spit up tremendous amounts.
  • They’re in pain.
  • They get very upset when it happens.
  • Or if they seem tired or lethargic.

Difference between spitting up and vomiting:

Spitting up is just like a quick drool that comes out of the mouth.  It is also known as “gastroesophageal reflux”. and is when foods or milk come back up to your baby’s esophagus and leave through the mouth. Vomiting is forceful and will more than likely upset your baby.  Vomiting hurts and usually brings up acid with it, leaving a burning effect.

As you can see, spitting up in babies is pretty normal.  It will happen to each baby at least once, or can happen during each feeding.  Make sure you always burp your baby to get rid of excess gas or air that may be trapped.  If you feel like your baby’s spitting up is an issue, set up an appointment with your baby’s pediatrician.
